I’m Althea, owner of Althea’s Fine Lingerie in downtown Milwaukee. My store is filled with lingerie I chose because I thought it was beautiful, interesting, wearable — or all three.
You’ll find bras, lace, embroidery, chemises, bodysuits and lingerie in colors you may not expect. Some pieces are practical. Some are sexy. Some manage to be both.
And unlike shopping online, you can actually see everything up close, feel the fabrics and try things on. Bring a friend if you want. Lingerie shopping is a lot more fun when someone you trust is standing outside the fitting room giving you an opinion.
I Pick What Comes Into This Store
Twice a year, I go to New York to meet with designers, see the collections in person and get my hands on the fabrics. I look at the colors, construction and details, then decide what I want to bring back to Milwaukee.
I’m not interested in filling every inch of the store just for the sake of having more stuff. I would rather carry pieces I’m excited to show you and that give you a reason to stop, pick something up and take a closer look.
Sometimes that is a gorgeous everyday bra. Sometimes it is beautiful embroidery or a color you would never have thought to choose for yourself. And sometimes it is a bodysuit that absolutely should not spend its whole life hidden under your clothes.
That is what I think a boutique should be: personal, thoughtfully chosen and a little unexpected.

Lingerie Does Not Have to Be Black or Red
I like color. A lot. Of course I carry black, but lingerie gets much more interesting when black is not the only answer.
You might walk in thinking you want something simple and then spot orange lace, deep blue embroidery, burgundy, yellow or something else you never would have searched for online.
That is one of the things I love about shopping for lingerie in person. Sometimes something catches your eye from across the room. Pick it up. That is why it is there.
Lace Can Be Fun
Lace does not have to feel traditional or predictable. It can be bright, modern, soft, dramatic or a little playful.
Sometimes it is the color that gets you. Sometimes it is the embroidery or the way the fabric feels. Sometimes you put something on and realize you like it much more than you expected to.
That is reason enough.
Look at the Details
A photograph can show you a lot, but it cannot show you everything.
When you see lingerie in person, you notice the embroidery, the texture, the colors and the little details that make one piece completely different from another.
You can feel the fabric, see how it is made and then try it on to find out whether you actually love it on you.
Yes, I Carry Chemises
Sometimes you want lace. Sometimes you want something silky. Sometimes you just want a chemise that feels beautiful the second you put it on.
Wear it to bed. Wear it because you have somewhere romantic to be. Wear it around the house because you feel like it.
I am not here to make rules about lingerie.
And Then There Are Bodysuits
A good bodysuit does not have to stay in the lingerie drawer. Wear it under a jacket, pair it with jeans, let a little lace show or keep the whole thing to yourself.
I carry bodysuits because they can be beautiful, versatile and really fun to wear. If you have never tried one because you assumed bodysuits were not for you, try one before you decide.
You might surprise yourself.
Bring a Friend
Lingerie shopping does not have to be a serious solo mission. Bring your best friend, your sister, your daughter, your mom or the person who will tell you when something looks fantastic — and when it absolutely does not.
Some of the most fun days in the boutique start with two people walking in because one of them needs something. Then the other person starts looking, someone tries something on, someone else spots a color she loves and pretty soon they are both shopping.
If you want to browse, laugh, try things on and make an afternoon of it, please do. That is part of the fun of shopping in person.
You Don’t Have to Know What You’re Looking For
You do not need to walk into my boutique with a shopping list. Maybe you need something for a wedding, a trip, a boudoir shoot, an anniversary or a particular outfit.
Maybe you are shopping for a gift. Maybe you just want something different from what is already in your drawer.
You can also come in and say, “I have no idea. I just want to look.”
I can work with that too.
Bras Are Here Too — And I Fit Them Differently
Bra fitting is a big part of what I do, but I do not start by wrapping a measuring tape around you and telling you that number is your size.
I look at how the bra actually fits your body — the band, the cups, the straps, the shape and the support — and then I start bringing you options.

Lingerie is personal, but shopping for it does not have to be uncomfortable.
Take your time. Look around. Ask questions. Tell me you hate something. Tell me you love something you never expected to like.
I am not going to hover over you trying to make a sale, but if you want help, I am right there. And because I chose what is in the store, I can tell you about it.
